Airplane noises, explained one by one
A noise you can’t place feels alarming. A noise you expected is just part of the flight. Here’s each one.
Before and during takeoff
On the ground you may hear a steady hum (the small auxiliary engine that powers the systems) and whirs as the flaps extend to their takeoff position. Then the engines spool up to a firm, even roar — the normal power to get airborne.
Climb
Shortly after takeoff you’ll hear a clunk and a whir: that’s the landing gear folding up. The engine note eases around the first minute — the standard noise-abatement power reduction, planned, not a fault. More whirs are the flaps retracting.
Descent and landing
Coming down you’ll hear the flaps extend again, the wind change, and the gear come down with a clunk. Cabin chimes are just the crew communicating. The loud roar right after touchdown is reverse thrust — the engines helping to brake, not a problem.

The landing gear retracting into the aircraft. It’s one of the first sounds after leaving the ground and it’s completely normal.
Why are there chimes during the flight?
They’re signals between the cabin crew and the flight deck, or seatbelt-sign changes. They’re routine communication, not alarms.
What is the roar when the plane lands?
Reverse thrust: the engines redirect their power to help slow the aircraft on the runway. The loud sound means braking is working.
