Is it safer to fly over mountains or over the sea?
A very common worry, and the answer is reassuring: the plane doesn’t “know” what’s beneath it, and its safety doesn’t change because of it.
The plane flies the same over anything
Lift, engines and systems work the same over water, mountains or a city. What’s below doesn’t change how the aircraft flies or how safe it is.
Over the sea: ETOPS
Ocean routes are covered by ETOPS certification (the A350 reaches 370 minutes toward a diversion on a single engine). Flying for hours over water is completely routine.
Over mountains: safe altitudes
In mountainous areas, aircraft fly at calculated minimum safe altitudes and carry terrain-awareness systems. The route is studied in advance. If it worries you to look down, that’s normal — but the plane responds to its design and systems, not to the scenery.
Bring this calm to your own flight
A personalised Co-pilot Briefing walks you through your specific flight in a calm captain’s voice.
Prepare my flightIs flying over the sea more dangerous?
No. ETOPS covers ocean routes and the aircraft flies exactly the same. Hours over water are routine.
What about flying over snowy mountains?
Aircraft use calculated minimum safe altitudes and terrain-awareness systems, on a route planned in advance.
Does what’s below the plane matter?
For how it flies and how safe it is, no. Safety comes from the aircraft and its systems, not the ground beneath.
