When you board, two highly trained professionals are already several years and thousands of hours into their preparation. Here’s what that journey looks like.
Years of study and supervised flying
Becoming an airline pilot takes years: a solid foundation of theory (aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, systems, air law) plus many hours of flying, first with an instructor and then building experience step by step. Nothing is skipped, and every stage is examined.
On top of the general licence, pilots earn a specific “type rating” for each aircraft they fly. They can’t simply move to a different model — they train and are checked on that exact aircraft first.
Always two qualified pilots, and a culture of checklists
Every commercial flight is operated by two qualified pilots who cross-check each other. Aviation runs on checklists precisely so that nothing depends on memory or a single person’s good day — the routine is designed to catch mistakes before they matter.
Pilots also pass regular medical examinations, and their licences depend on staying current. Being fit and up to date isn’t optional; it’s a continuous requirement.
The simulator every six months
Even after all that, pilots return to a full-motion simulator roughly every six months to rehearse rare situations — an engine issue, strong crosswinds, a go-around — over and over. By the time anything unusual could ever happen in the air, they’ve already practised it many times on the ground.
That’s the quiet reason flying feels so routine: an enormous amount of preparation happens before you ever board, so that the flight itself is calm and boring, exactly as it should be.
